The Call Remembered

A Voice from the Past
A strange late-night call
Pierce once telephoned Oedipa in a succession of comic and threatening voices, ending in the familiar persona he used during their trip to Mazatlán. She dismissed the call as another eccentric performance.
An afterimage
After his death, its remembered ambiguity becomes newly charged. Oedipa wonders whether the call anticipated her appointment or belonged only to their old, difficult intimacy.
A Name in the Codicil

Chosen for the Estate
The will’s surprise
A law firm informs Oedipa that Pierce named her executor in a codicil. She struggles to recall what might have prompted his decision and feels exposed by a choice she cannot explain.
The dead man’s agency
Although Pierce cannot speak for himself, his legal act directs her movements. His posthumous influence begins the plot and gives every later discovery a possible personal source.
The Property Web

A Businessman’s Reach
Holdings everywhere
Pierce’s interests touch developments, local businesses, industrial ventures, and institutions near San Narciso. Oedipa repeatedly encounters his ownership while following clues that initially seem unrelated.
A possible design
The breadth of the holdings makes it plausible that he could have arranged parts of her investigation. It also makes the estate difficult to separate from the town and from the possibility of a genuine underground.
A Personal Joke or Legacy

The Estate Under Suspicion
Every route points back
Oedipa realizes that the bookstore, theatre, and other sites connected to the mystery belonged to Pierce or depended on his largesse. Even seemingly independent witnesses could have been placed within his orbit.
Motives multiply
She considers whether Pierce built an elaborate prank, hoped to improve her, or stumbled upon the network himself. His death prevents her from testing any explanation directly.
The Unanswered Testament

What Pierce Left
The dead man’s limits
Oedipa can no longer summon Pierce as a vivid conversational presence, yet she develops compassion for the constricted and acquisitive life he may have led. His motives remain beyond her reach.
An inheritance beyond assets
She considers that the legacy might be a conspiracy against death, an accidental discovery, or simply the estate of a man who died. The possibility that the inheritance is America widens the question without resolving it.
